What is Convergence? Convergence Information Q and A format description and information about the Convergence mod.

Q) What is "Convergence"?

A) Convergence is a fully playable addon mission set for "Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen" for all 3 game character, Sisko, Kira and Worf. It is being created by one of the orginal level designers for "Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen", Eric Reuter, with help and support from members of the DS9 Community, most noteable, Lewis "Dyre Straits" Turner, Barry Lowy, John T. Conte, and Ken "Datacable" Quick along with Marie "GhostWolf" Rycraft

Q) How many levels will there be?

A) It looks like around 18-20 when complete. (approx. 6 for each character). Could be more.

Q) When will it be finished?

A) We're hopeful to have it released before March 31st, 2006. Emphasis on hopeful. The mod was originally planned as a failry simple level pack, with very little back-story. It ended up becoming what we like to think of as the unnoficial sequel to The Fallen. It is much larger than originally planned, and has a complete storyline, missions, goals and objectives . . . basically everything "The Fallen" had, and more!. The number and size of the levels, along with the mission objectives, should provide many hours of gameplay.

Q) What is the story behind the missions? Is there any story?

A) There is a definate plot and storyline that we are working on, and hope to make it compelling and interesting. The main focus is a secret facility operating on SR III (Where the Ulysses crashed in the original game), and the situation that develops around this facility, its mission, and a race to control it's secrets.

Q) Are there any new enemies, weapons, or game characters?

A) There are no new models being introduced for any creatures, enemies or other characters, however, we are implementing some unique NPC characters, such as StarFLeet personnel. These will have unique identies and custom dialogue.

Q) Will there be new custom dialog for the characters?

A) Yes, but I don't have much pull in trying to get the actors from the series to record new dialog for my little mod, so we won't have any new dialog from the main characters. However, we are incorporating all new dialogue for NPC characters (such as Starfleet personnel, and possibly some enemies) to advance the plotline and increase the interest. Overall, there will be numerous moments where dialog occurs, and we are implementing many interesting interactions between characters to add to the feel of the game and further the mod's storyline. We will also utilize additional ways of gathering information and for the player to learn about what is going on, such as through PADDs, and providing some back story as you progress.

Q) Are there any cinematics in Convergence?

A) Yes, there are a large number of in-game cinematic moments, placed throughout the game.

Q) What is the gameplay like in Convergence?

A) The gameplay is very much action-oriented. Probably more than in the original. The missions do incorporate some minor puzzle elements, but not to the point of annoyance. Convergence is set in a desperate situation, with much at stake, and many violent forces vying for control of the "secrets" on SR-III. Experienced players of The Fallen will find the missions very challenging, especially the later ones. First-time players will have have a short time to hone their skills in the opening levels, but even these are not easy. The best way to describe Convergence's gameplay would be this:

1) You'll need good reflexes and player-control skills. If you didn't play The Fallen very much, a good idea would be to play through at least a few missions first, and get comfortable with that level of gameplay, before trying Convergence. Also, if it's been a while, you may want to open The Fallen's training mission (from the menu), and go through that again, to re-acquaint yourself with the controls, environment, and features.

2) There are many areas of intense combat, quite a number of surprises, and some fierce enemies.

3) Some exploration will be required. You will be required to locate things such as Isolinear cards and the like.

4) You will need to accomplish a number of different tasks, such as restoring certain equipment to operation.

5) There is almost always an alternate way to approach a difficult situation in Convergence. Thinking ahead of time, using your tricorder, and knowing your environment will be greatly rewarded. "Run-and-Gun" will almost certainly get you killed. This is NOT Unreal Tournament or Quake III Arena.

Q) What are the system requirements for Convergence?

A) Any reasonable new computer (last 2 years or so) with a good graphics card should do fine. These new missions are more complex and larger than the original levels, so more horsepower is definately in order. We recommend a minimum of a PIII 866Mhz but a 1.5Ghz or faster P4 is recommended., 32MB Video RAM minimum,, 64-128MB AGP video card recommended, and system ram of 256MB or more (512MB or more is better).

Q) Why are you making a mod for a 5 year old game?

A) DS9 The Fallen was probably the game I enjoyed working on and playing the most. I'm a trekkie since watching the original series in the late 60's, and I have a real love and affinity for the trek universe. In addition, Dyre Straits and the fans, still active on the official site boards, deserve a chance to play some new levels, and I couldn't think of anything more enjoyable than to see if I could pull off a decent mod. Besides, I love design, and this is a great chance to do something that the fans of DS9, and especially "The Fallen" might enjoy playing.
